TARA PROJECTS
[Trade alternative reform action]

TARA has been working for the past 30 years in a radius of 200kms in and around New Dehli in Nth India Their goal is to fight exploitation and poverty of craftspeople and their communities who do not have any dignified identity and face inhuman exploitation and injustice in the traditional production and trade system. The project seeks to combat poverty through fair trade, political and social lobbying , education and proper development of craft communities.

This statement is erected in large letters in TARA`s office.

Poverty is not only about shortage of money.

Its about rights and relationships,

about how people are treated and how they regard themselves,

about powerlessness, exclusion and loss of dignity.

Yet, the lack of an adequate income is at its heart

So--------FAIR TRADE

TARA has a large range of different products that it produces through organized groups and workshops and it supports several thousand people.

ARTISANS EFFORT

This organisation is based in Kolkata ( Calcutta ) It was founded in 2003 by a group of Artisans specialising in various types of handcrafts. The people heard that by being part of 'fair trade' you are "treated" with respect, a fair price is paid and good business relations are set up between producers and sellers. All of the Artisans had previously been treaded badly with problems in being paid very irregular work.  They have gradually learned about fair trade procedures and now part of India Fair Trade Forum.More than 150 families are involved. They work closely with the communities and are presently involved with the education of needy children by providing their school fees, uniforms and books.
