SARI

The Sari is a traditional dress of Indian women. It dates back to 3000BC and is an easy to wear and practical garment for a hot climate.
It is made from 5-6 m of material which is pleated and draped around the body and then finished with a shawl across the shoulder or head. It is normally made from fine cotton or silk in a limitless array of colours and patterns.A short fitted blouse is worn under the Sari.
Red is the colour worn for a bride which denotes good luck and fertility.
The Sari is produced by the women artisans of Surjomukhi, a fair trade organisation in Bangladesh. It supports 40 regular sewers providing income and empowerment to destitute women. A workshop and training centre is provided in Dhaka.In 2 sizes to fit children 3-6 years in red, orange or blue, or use for display. Cold hand washable only.

KIMONO

The Kimono is the traditional dress of the Japanese for both men and women and is still worn for special occasions such as weddings. It is worn with a long wide sash called an “Obi”. To wear, the kimono is wrapped around the right side of the body and overlapped with the left side. There are holes underneath the sleeves for the sash to be pulled through.
Traditionally the Obi would be up to 12ft long and wrapped around and round and kept in place with a special fastening at the back. On the feet would be worn “Tabi” or Japanese socks with a socket for the big toe. “Zori” is a thick soled sandal with a V-shape between the big toe and the rest of the foot to hold it in place. Shoes are always removed in Japanese homes.

PANJABI costume

The Panjabi is a traditional style of shirt worn by Bangladesh men. It is loose fitting with a wide sleeve. It can be made from cotton or silk fabrics depending on the occasion and can be decorated with many designs of embroidery. It is traditionally worn over loose pajama matching pants but modern men may wear it over jeans. The cap is worn by the Muslim community and is used during prayer or special festivals.

This beautiful gypsy costume consists of a skirt, short blouse and gold fringed headscarf. It is made from purple cotton and is hand block printed in a gold, orange and green design . It is finished with mirrors decorating the neckline, sleeves, bodice and skirt and 3 little bells on the press studs of the blouse.

SALMAR KAMEEZ

The Salwar Kameez is a traditional dress of Pakistani women. It consists of a long top called a” Kurti” worn over loose pants “ Chudidaars”. A long scarf “Dupatta” completes the outfit and is normally worn across both shoulders or on the head. The costume is in a soft blue cotton, hand painted in a darker blue and pink and finished with sequins.

QIPAO OR CHEONSAM

This costume is made from red satin fabric and beautifully embroidered on the front. It is finished with a long zipper down the back and is produced by the artisans of Surjomukhi in Bangladesh.
The style of dress has been popular in China since the 17th century. It originated in the time of the Manchu when the tribes united under the “Banner System”. Both men & women started to wear a ‘banner’ or straight loose fitting tube dress.
In the 1920s the dress became very popular and evolved into the semi fitted dress with the high neck and collar with slits up the side. In the north of China it is known as the Qipao and in the
south the Cheongsam.Chest width is 45cm or can be used as a display. Cold hand washable only.

MANCHURIAN COSTUME

ARABIAN COSTUME

This male costume is the traditional dress of Saudi Arabia and Palestine.
It is influenced by climate, utility and custom. It consists of the loose fitting ankle length shirt usually in white known as a “thawb”. It is worn over loose pants. On the head is worn a “ghutra an iqal”, which is a head cloth with a double circle of black rope or cord to hold in place. The square head cloth is normally made of coloured checks. The cloth is folded diagonally into a triangle with the folded line placed across the forehead and held in place with the ring.
