BANGLADESH

Bangladesh is a small country located in the Bay of Bengal with a population of over 130 million people. It is flat land with a large delta system which is regularly flooded in the annual monsoon. It is one of the poorest countries in the world having been independent for just over 30 years. Many women were widowed during the war and are still affected by their past and also by having to live  restricted lives due to their low status in the community and family.. The Fair trade organisations that  Earthlink supports focus on women  and strives to help them reach a sustainable level of independence for themselves and a better future for their children.

THE YWCA CRAFT CENTRE

The YWCA craft centre supports, trains and creates job opportunities for more than 400 women who would otherwise be destitute. The centre is situated in Dhaka and there is provision for 100 women to work there, The other women work in their own homes in the poorest parts of the city or nearby villages. The YWCA develop overseas  markets for the Handcrafts they produce  and provide many additional services for the women such as: A compulsory 10% saving scheme, Health and nutritional advice and subsidised medicines, Legal advice, Interest free loans, Annual recreation programme, Literacy training for illiterate women, Welfare fund and generally supports the women in a holistic manner.

The women are grateful for this opportunity as the alternative for many is breaking bricks by hand for a few Taka a day. This provides road fill for roads washed away annually by the monsoon. By working at the YWCA they are able to provide for themselves and educate their children with dignity.

The YWCA has recently opened a new craft centre 20 kms from Dhaka, in a rural area to cater for the needs of the  woman it now trains in Handcrafts from the surrounding local villages.

C.0.R.R. - THE JUTE WORKS

[ A women's non-profit handcraft making trust ]

Women in the village of Dori Para where jute products are produced.

Corr- the Jute Works was established in 1973 to rehabilitate the war affected, poverty stricken rural women in Bangladesh. It has grown to support over 5000 women in 17 production cooperatives all over the country using Fair Trade principles.

The women have traditionally made handcrafted jute products for their own use, but with the assistance and guidance of Corr have developed them into marketable products sold around the world. In the local climate jute grows prolifically and can be harvested annually making it an economical and plentiful raw material for the women to use.

The women have been able to help build homes for their families and educate their children to a higher level through the sale of the Handcrafts.
